Elephant Hawkmoth
...and along pops a lovely Elephant Hawkmoth....probably the Hawkmoth that comes to the trap, in my experience, more than any other. They are rather fabulous, if somewhat bizarre, in appearance.
Last night was another good night considering the catches this year so far which have been very poor here and in several other places that I have contact with. I also noted that the Sussex Recorder has reported the worst year for moths in 50 years of recording history. All the people I know have reported poor catches for most of the time with rare 'large' catches. For me the micro moths in particular have been absent most of the time so it was nice to see a couple in the trap.
Anyway, here are some of the moths...no particular order...however, I will start with a new moth for myself and it really is rather splendidly coloured...
True Lovers Knot
Alder Kitten
Clouded Border
Common White Wave
Coronet
Garden Pebble....a micro
Miller
Riband Wave
At lunch time today I arrived back at the house and out of the corner of my eye I spotted a yellow flash across the small front garden, landing in the hedge. I quickly got a pot and managed to capture this fine looking specimen....
