Here we are again....Spring

Hurrah!  Spring has truly arrived.  I feel I have neglected this site somewhat, though it has been difficult to get in and around the garden due to the saturated lawn (sometimes flooded with the aid of our pond)...and the fences having blown down.....still....hopefully this entry will make up for this...
Fences propped up (I do look forward to my neighbours get their act together to sort things out)...and a week of good weather and the grass has dried out sufficiently for proper access.
Ive known for several months that I would have to replace the lining of the pond and my reading on the subject meant it was a job for Spring time....and seeing that my wife had spotted two frogs in the pond this week we thought it had better be this weekend....

....but first....having been out and about Friday evening and seeing a couple of moths, I thought that Saturday evening would be a good chance to set the trap for the first time this year just to see if anything is about....so here we go...eyes down....

Common Quaker

Hebrew Character

Oak Beauty

A total of 11 moths caught.  Not bad considering the time of year...and plenty to look forward to!

Post moth trap I went off and did some birding at Whetsted Gravel Pit....see my birding blog...

On my return from Five Oak Green I started the job of putting in a new pond liner.....
The level is clearly falling....thankfully the rain over the winter has kept it topped up....
....though sometimes over flowing in to the garden....

....equipment lined up and ready to go....

....plants out....water out....

...in the shade...buckets full of frogs and newts....and all sorts....

job nearly done....yes, my sons bucket came in use for the last bit.....

....removing the rocks around the pond ready for the new liner...

...we simply put the new liner on top of the old liner after a good clear out of the bottom of the old one....

alls well that ends well...heres 2 of the 12...yes...12!! frogs in the pond...

...a solitary frog...

...this amorous couple were found in this position, transferred to a bucket in this position, put back in the pond in this position...and then seen in this position still about 15 minutes later....!!....i reckon it took several hours to do the pond from start to finish....so they are obviously keen on each other...!!!

.....more pics to follow.....

  1. Hi there, couldn't help but notice that the male frog in the bottom pic has grey patches on its skin. I think this is probably Ranid Herpesvirus 2 and should possibly be reported. Have a look here for info: http://www.gardenwildlifehealth.org/files/2013/06/Amphibian-Ranid-Herpesvirus-factsheet_GWH.pdf
