Moth Haul

On the night of 24/25 September my moth haul was around 165 in total....quite amazing....when I lived in Hastings I used to think getting around 40-60 was a grand total and I suppose for there it was considering the light concentration from street lamps and houses near by.
Here in Pembury there isnt too much of either and having larger gardens around facilitates a much better chance of catching......recently I have been pleased to get around 100 but this new total is amazing for a 30w actinic lamp.....im guessing if I had been using a 125w or 250w mercury vapour lamp it would have been a much larger catch.  Of course, whenever a record is made the only thing you can try to do to it is break it!...

The main part of the catch, around 75, was Large Yellow Underwings so I thought I would take this opportunity to post a few pictures of them now.

They are worth highlighting as they are one of the moths with variagated topwing colours (with the underwing obviously being yellow in all of them).

Getting a picture of their underwing is slightly more difficult.  This moth is one of the most lively and will, at the slightest disturbance, take off at speed and buzz away.
