Lets start with a micro...although its not as small as some people would think it being in the micro world of moths....its all very confusing for people new to the 'sport' of moth trapping....I wont even bother to explain it, just go with the flow....
Most micros dont have names other than latin, where as most macros have a latin and ordinary name makiing it easier to remember them and probably why when most people start trapping they concentrate on the macros because of the names and yes, they are mostly bigger and easier to identify....anyway....this micro does have a latin and ordinary name....
Bee Moth Aphomia sociella
Heres a very nice macro....
Buff Ermine
Heres one of the larger moths, and I reckon if non-moth people saw this on their ceiling or wall they might think they have been invaded by some strange alien.....and its called a Lobster Moth due to the appearance of its caterpillar...go here....http://www.secretcritters.com/lobster-moth-caterpillar/
Lobster Moth
Finally, a very nice micro Tortrix family member....the caterpillars roll themselves up in leaves and flowers....this one doesnt have an ordinary name....and they like ivy so if you have some in your garden dont pull it down and chop it at the bottom as so many people do, just trim it back now and then, preferably over winter. You might not see the rewards ie caterpillars and moths...but they will quietly say...thank you!
